< Back to SPEED overview

In order to provide UK climate change data that have high temporal and spatial resolution, are consistent with historical observations and demonstrate a range of possible climate change scenarios, SPEED has developed the CHESS-SCAPE future climate data set. This is derived directly from climate model output provided by UK Climate Projections 2018 (UKCP18), but extends it by:

  1. downscaling to 1 km resolution based on physical and empirical relationships
  2. bias-correcting to the CHESS-met observation-based data set
  3. developing alternative Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios, derived from the original RCP8.5 scenario provided by UKCP18.

CHESS-SCAPE provides several physical climate variables over the UK for the period 1980-2080 at 1 km spatial resolution and time steps ranging from daily to decadal averages. It is derived from four members of the UKCP18 12 km Regional Climate Model (RCM) ensemble, downscaled to 1 km and extended to cover four scenarios: RCP2.6, 4.5, 6.0 and 8.5. The data are available with and without bias-correction.
